David Loffing is vice president and chief engineer of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Appointed to this position in 2023, he is responsible for the effectiveness and efficiency of the engineering function across Commercial Airplanes and leads engineering design, safety and customer support activities for all commercial airplane models.

Prior to this role, Loffing was vice president and chief engineer for the 777X program. He also served as the 777 chief program engineer (CPE), the 747-8 CPE and as a member of the New Mid-Market Airplane Program Office executive leadership team focusing on Digital Transformation. He joined Boeing nearly 20 years ago, and has held engineering leadership positions across the company’s single and twin-aisle jet families and future airplane concepts.

From 2019 to 2021, in addition to his chief program engineer roles, Loffing was the engineering executive leader for 737 MAX return to service activities in Europe and the Middle East. In this role, he worked with international regulators and 737 MAX operators to ensure readiness for a safe and successful return to service.

Loffing is a member of the board for Flight Safety Foundation. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, and was awarded the Outstanding Aerospace Engineer distinction by Purdue School of Aeronautics & Astronautics in 2016.
