Nose for Flight

In early 1969, the 747 flight-test program was well underway with five test airplanes, each with different roles.

I took this photo on the Everett, Wash., flight line of the No. 3 test airplane, also known as "RA003," when it had its nose boom installed to support loads testing.

During this period I was assigned to the 747 Flight Deck. My job was installing the production air data system, so I was quite interested in the boom installation.

Since the nose boom was installed for only a brief time, the photo may be one of only a few taken of it.

The No. 3 747-100 test airplane, or "RA003," and its nose boom. The boom was installed for only a brief time.
